Just what I was looking for...Feb 06, 2011
By J. Merolla
"Savvy Shopper"
I had such a hard time finding slender, smaller-scaled spoons for serving with my Le Creuset and Staub enameled cast iron pieces, and these are just perfect! Some of my spoons are the same length (about 11") but are overall larger with bigger bowls and just looked "klutzy" and each scoop picked up too much food. With these you can pick up a good sized portion without it being overwhelming.
However, if you are serving dishes that include a lot of liquid such as soups and stews, you will need spoons with larger bowls. These spoons are perfect for food that has some "body" (kind of sticks together on its own), such as potato dishes, pasta dishes, and the like.
I have noticed that some guests, once they have helped themselves to some food, are reluctant to put some back because they wound up having too much and these solve that problem. The description doesn't tell you much about size and I worried about this until I received the spoons.
Also (VERY important if you are dealing with enameled cast iron), the entire length of the spoon is covered in silicone. If the handle was made of metal, it could chip the edge of the vessel if it was rested against it. Plastic could possibly melt. Wood would be a good choice, but I always feel wood can absorb something from the food that can't be cleaned properly.
The red color is very nice and I just ordered another set in yellow to go with my yellow cast iron pots.
Overall, I am extremely pleased with these spoons and highly recommend them!
Update - 2/10/11 - I received the yellow spoons today and they are just as nice as the red ones, but the color is a little "orangey". If you're intent on a perfect match to a true yellow pot or serving dish, these probably will not make you happy. For me, they're close enough.
